Introduction to the Balanced Scorecard
This area of the website is designed to get you quickly up to speed on the Balanced Scorecard, and comprises four 'tabs' of useful information.
Under the introduction tab we have an easy to assimilate slide presentation, some short FAQ documents, and longer briefing papers which look at application of the Balanced Scorecard.
If you want to get into more detail look under the other three tabs or follow some of the links to external resources.
Frequently Asked Questions
Balanced Scorecard is simple in principle, but practical design and implementation requires a good deal of art, craft and science. When you want to quickly get a feel for what to do in designing or using Scorecard you can do without long academic articles or case studies.
Achieving speedy clarity and direction is vital: selecting the wrong approach or poorly implementing the right approach can be costly - in time, money and lost opportunity. In this regard our shorter FAQs on Strategic Control and Performance Management topics are here to help.

Presentations
We may have persuaded you of the benefits of Balanced Scorecard, but now you have to win over your colleagues. While the principles of Balanced Scorecard are simple, communicating the practical detail can be a challenge. The presentations on this page are here to help you understand, discuss and communicate Balanced Scorecard.

Research Papers
Its all very well to write on a website, but the true test of understanding and methodological rigour is academic peer review; the process required upon submission of articles to academic publications. Historically 2GC has exposed its research at academic conferences - but increasingly we have aired our most interesting material in academic and practitioner journals. Balanced Scorecard, Strategic Control, and Strategic and Performance Management topics all feature within the 2GC research programme. This page links to many of these papers.

Case Studies
It is in our client work that the effectiveness of 3rd Generation Balanced Scorecard is put to the test. The Balanced Scorecard approach is robust and reliable, but successful design and implementation requires flexibility on the part of the process, the designers and 2GC as process facilitators.
The 2GC case studies aim to anchor theory in reality, and communicate our considerable experience of practical design, use and review of Corporate Performance Management systems.

Reading Ideas
Much of what makes up current thinking on Balanced Scorecard, Performance Management and Strategic Control theory is straightforward at the level of principle. Nonetheless, it remains hard to find clear and practicable commentaries or sources on these topics. In drawing together these lists of textbooks and journal articles an important assessment criterion therefore was the need for clarity and accessibility.
The readings here recommended are not easy, but you won't need a PhD!

Software Vendors Database
Our database has details of over 100 software packages. The database started out as an internal resource used by 2GC to keep track on which software vendors were actively promoting Balanced Scorecard software. It is a work in progress: over time we hope to substantially expand the information provided about vendors and their products.
To access the database, visit the Software Database section.
Weblinks Database
The 2GC Weblinks database is continually growing and improving. Each entry is checked at least twice each year, and we add new sites as we find them.
For each site in the list there are brief comments about the site along with a rating and a list of features to provide you (hopefully) with a useful starting point for your own investigations.
