2GC’s Balanced Scorecard training is based around three core offerings:
- Building Best Practice Balanced Scorecards
- Introduction to Balanced Scorecard
- Customised Training Courses
Building Best Practice Balanced Scorecards
An open two-day training course
A two-day residential course which provides more in-depth coverage of the Balanced Scorecard framework, combined with hands-on practical exposure to the design and development methods 2GC uses in its own work.
Our most popular offering, “Building Best Practice Balanced Scorecards”, is highly interactive. It is our firm belief that Balanced Scorecard cannot be taught by traditional ’chalk and talk‘ lecturing alone. One has to ’learn by doing‘. Accordingly, we have a course that comprises both interactive exercises as well as traditional lecture material. The interactive material is such that delegates actually design and build a Balanced Scorecard in the context of a small and uncomplicated organisation. The design exercises run over the two days of the course, and delegates report that these are by far the most useful and revelatory material on the course. The remainder of ’lecture‘ type material is essential, and we deliver this in an open and engaging style, with many relevant examples of practice; all of course derived from our considerable experience of real-life Balanced Scorecard design. All lectures are underpinned by critical works in Balanced Scorecard; that is, the articles from peer reviewed academic journals that provide a genuine scientific underpinning for our course.
The standard public course is delivered so that we alternate coverage of theory with a follow-on session on practical implementation. Each theoretical session is about 40 minutes, and then this is deployed in the case scenario over about 90 minutes. In this way the two days of the course progress in a lively and active manner. Delegates report that the two days are hard work, but very rewarding. Delegate numbers are strictly limited so as to maximise the opportunity for engagement and interaction.
Introduction to Balanced Scorecard
An open one-day training course
A one-day course which as it’s name suggests is designed to provide a clear and comprehensive introduction to the Balanced Scorecard framework and its use within organisations.
Created in response to client demand, this is a version of our two-day training course that can be delivered in one day. The one day course loses the degree of interactivity to be found in the standard course, but nevertheless contains a considerable degree of exercise work. The offering is designed to work with much larger groups than the two day course.
Our one-day course is popular with event organisers - and regularly forms the basis of customised one-day courses.
Customised Training Courses
Performance Management courses designed to suit your particular needs
Custom designed courses on a wide range of performance management and Balanced Scorecard topics. Usually these are offered as ’in-house’ programmes, but we have also developed custom training events in partnership with event management companies to deliver as part of conferences or other large events.
The principles of Balanced Scorecard are applicable in nearly all organisational contexts. But sometimes, to ensure a receptive context for our course within a challenging industrial context we customise the core course. Customisation usually takes place at the level of the context, for example, we have in the past set our case material and exercises in healthcare and defence contexts because the client thought it would help make a better reception for the material.
Customisation can also be at the level of specific tools and techniques. For example, in recent years we have often been called upon to help clients implement Balanced Scorecard in the Human Resource (HR) function. In in addition to our consulting work with these companies, we have built an add-on to our training that deals with the specifics of HR application. Another type of customisation is where we go into more detail on a specific aspect of the Balanced Scorecard design process. The most recent of these was in measure development. Our standard public training course includes approximately half a day on the theory and practical aspects of measure development. However, some clients are training teams will be doing a great deal of in depth and detailed Key Performance Indicator (KPI) work, and they want the benefits of our practical experience in KPIs, measures and targets. Accordingly we have created half-day and one-day add-on modules for our standard course. In these extra sessions delegates look at more advanced theory behind measure development, and also explore real-life case examples of useful and less-useful measures.
Materials
All course materials are provided in paper and electronic format to course delegates. We also offer follow up access to our Balanced Scorecard consultants in the days and months after your course. This could be for clarification of concepts, materials (e.g., journal article access) or general advice on Balanced Scorecard and related topics.
